Latchaw Mine Trail

 Printable Version

Though there aren't many ruins left at the Latchaw Mine, the trip there is worth it for the exquisite views, both at the end and on the way. You'll even be able to say that you've seen the  Colorado Trail, as it crosses the four-wheel-drive portion of your journey.

From CR 321, go west on CR 327, which begins as easy gravel, but soon involves steep inclines and large erosion ruts. You'll come to a few forks, but always go left. The forks heading right are former burro trails that all dead end. You'll also be traveling though private property, so obey all posted signs. When the four-wheel driving becomes too much for you or if you make it all the way to the end of the drivable portion, park and walk the rest of the way. The hike is a bit steep early on, but then levels off, becoming an easy walk. The lovely views will inspire you as you finish the trip. Don't be distracted by them, though, as there are some drop-offs on the narrow route, which shouldn't be a problem unless you're careless.
