Huron Peak

 Printable Version

Huron Peak (14,003 ft.) just makes the cut for being a Colorado “fourteener”. Despite it being the lowest of fifty-four fourteeners in the state, many in the climbing community regard Huron Peak as one of the most scenic and enjoyable climbs in the Sawatch Range.

The Huron Peak Trail offers variety in scenery. On its summit, one has the wonderful views of many other neighboring peaks, but you’re also rewarded with the spectacular view of the “Three Apostles”, located to the south on the Continental Divide.

Directions to the trailhead: At the Winfield Ghost Town, travel south on Road 390.2b. For 0.5 miles, the road is a drivable dirt road for any vehicle. However, for the remaining two miles, it becomes a rougher road requiring a 4WD vehicle. The trailhead is just beyond the end of the road.

If you’re not interested in a tough climb, there are many other trails to enjoy such as the Lake Ann Trail and the Silver Basin Trail. Also, many nearby high elevation lakes exist for fishing: Cloyses Lake, Lake Ann and Pear Lake. Also, Clear Creek Canyon, home of the Vicksburg and Winfield ghost towns, is regarded as an excellent choice for camping and many other mountain and outdoor activities.
