Wildlife Viewing Areas

 Printable Version

Wildlife viewing is a terrific family activity. Photography opportunities are abundant with the numerous mountain ranges and stunning scenery of our region. As if the whole area isn’t great enough, for those seeking to photograph wildlife, we recommend the following spots that are preserved for wildlife.

Bighorn Sheep Canyon –This long section of Highway 50 between Salida and Canon City is named such because of the numerous bighorn sheep that make it home. The mountains, tall canyon walls and Arkansas River are magnificent enough, but check the hillsides carefully. It is common to see bighorn sheep and other wildlife.

Love Ranch Wildlife Observatory – Located in Chalk Creek Canyon, a grassy and forested area is dedicated to deer, bighorn sheep, antelope, elk and other wildlife. An outdoor wooden observatory has been built for people to watch and read more about wildlife in the area. This is located on the north side of Chaffee County Road 162, west of Nathrop and the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs as one travels toward St. Elmo.

Heckendorf Elk Reserve – Northwest of Buena Vista, a large area has been dedicated to elk herds that have roamed in this valley for centuries. Directions: From the center of town, travel north on Highway 24. Turn left (west) on County Road 384, then turn right (north) at County Road 361. Past County Road 368, the preserve , with an observation deck, is on the left.
